THE SUPPLY SIDE ECONOMICS OF HIRING
It would be an understatement to suggest that the market for hiring IT professionals is candidate driven. We live in a world where Computer Science and Information Technology training and education cannot keep up with the demand for these types of skills in today’s marketplace. In addition we have made it more difficult for companies in the United States to utilize the talents of those candidates educated outside of the US. This is not a political statement, it is a reality. Finally, the nature of the current IT landscape is such that Information Technology professionals are increasingly likely to need better non IT skills to leverage technology to affect business process improvement. All of these influences suggest that demand is rising at a pace, which far exceeds supply.
For these reasons it is extremely important that employers in today's candidate driven market understand how to differentiate their organization in the eyes of this limited talent pool. Frankly it is a huge step for employers to even realize that this is the case and for those that do, they can then begin the process of beating out their competition for the best IT talent.
It is fairly obvious what motivates a candidate to accept one company’s offer over another when all things seem equal. We ask that the employer simply put himself in the position of the candidate. What would be important to you in the same position?
In no particular order of importance there are number of things that mean as much or more than compensation to employees. A balance between work and personal life has become a significant advantage in the eyes of today’s employee. Things like remote working capability and flex hours are very important along with any other creative offerings that allow people to be productive and have time with their families. The overall working environment has become a significant variable in choosing a place of employ. This could encompass quality work space, convenient parking, workout facilities and gourmet cafeterias to name a few. Significant opportunities to grow and learn through training and mentorship allow people to remain in one job while expanding their professional horizons. State of the art technology accomplishes a similar goal in allowing IT professionals to work with the latest tools without having to go elsewhere. If your organization has consistently outperformed your competition financially and in doing so has been able to offer competitive bonuses to it’s employees, this should be promoted extensively in the interview process. Lastly, there is tremendous power and influence to be gained in emphasizing the intangible assets an organization has to offer. These might include; chemistry, recognition, empowerment, autonomy and overall corporate reputation.
Again, a realization that attracting the best talent is today’s market is an obligation that you have and not an inherent right will go a long way in assuring you are building the best IT team for your organization. For more information contact us at management@lucidsolutionsllc.com
